Yan Giroux - My son

Synopsis

Anouk Verviers’s exhibition presents the first two chapters of a dystopian trilogy that explores chronic pain as experienced by women and non-binary people. In the first video, performers erect a cob column that symbolizes their mutual support for one another as they collectively rewrite the story of their exhaustion. The second evokes four thousand years of history through a geological metaphor for endometriosis. Throughout the series, bodies dealing with pain merge with their treatment and transform into feminist cyborgs endowed with the power to act not only on their pain but, more importantly, with it.

Yan Giroux - My son

Synopsis

MY SON CAME BACK TO DISAPPEAR is the eponymous adaptation of David Clerson’s novel. This impressionistic film tells the story of Suzanne, whose isolated life in the forest is disrupted by the sudden return of her estranged son Mathieu, whom she hasn’t seen for so many years. Day after day, she is burdened by Mathieu’s desire to return to the peat bog—a hidden place in the forest haunted by their shared memories of the past. At first, she resists, unwilling to show him the path but finally gives in and leads the way. As they get nearer, mother and son weave a fragile bond – if only for a moment. Despite her deep love, Suzanne cannot keep her son from his final journey.

Prayer for a Lost Mitten - Jean-François Lesage

Synopsis

The video installation Speculative Creatures examines the place of intuition, prediction and speculation in the worlds of finance, spirituality and machine learning. The evolving narrative structure of the work is generated by a probability tool based on Markov chains. Using computer code, the order of the installation’s multiple audio sequences differs from time to time, generating constantly renewed associations of ideas.

Prayer for a Lost Mitten - Jean-François Lesage

Synopsis

Far from a picture-perfect postcard, this film offers a personal view of the Minganie landscapes in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region. Following the rhythm imposed by the elements, Sylvain L’Espérance patiently observes the sea, plants, rocks, and clouds cohabitate and their interactions with the contrasting sunlight. Through visual and sound research of great aesthetic precision, asserts a natural reality that exists only through the artistic gaze cast with the help of a technique that imposes its presence and that of the filmmaker. This feature film embodies the potential and limits of its digital source in an approach that at times turns the material abstract. Archéologie de la lumière is a film of infinite detail and is part of the experimental approach of a filmmaker with an infectious curiosity and unique point of view.
