Prayer for a Lost Mitten - Jean-François Lesage

Synopsis

The video installation Speculative Creatures examines the place of intuition, prediction and speculation in the worlds of finance, spirituality and machine learning. The evolving narrative structure of the work is generated by a probability tool based on Markov chains. Using computer code, the order of the installation’s multiple audio sequences differs from time to time, generating constantly renewed associations of ideas.

Prayer for a Lost Mitten - Jean-François Lesage

Synopsis

Far from a picture-perfect postcard, this film offers a personal view of the Minganie landscapes in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region. Following the rhythm imposed by the elements, Sylvain L’Espérance patiently observes the sea, plants, rocks, and clouds cohabitate and their interactions with the contrasting sunlight. Through visual and sound research of great aesthetic precision, asserts a natural reality that exists only through the artistic gaze cast with the help of a technique that imposes its presence and that of the filmmaker. This feature film embodies the potential and limits of its digital source in an approach that at times turns the material abstract. Archéologie de la lumière is a film of infinite detail and is part of the experimental approach of a filmmaker with an infectious curiosity and unique point of view. Prayer for a Lost Mitten - Jean-François Lesage

Synopsis

An unfinished film is passed along from one friend to another. The dialog between them is a journey crossed by the swarming of the Great Eastern Brood X of periodical cicadas that prophetically emerge every 17 years in the United States, invoking a reflection of a post-pandemic present and our shared futures.
A road movie composed of a chorus of voices (both human and non-human), the warnings of history, the power of nature and rebirth. (Kino Rebelde)

Prayer for a Lost Mitten - Jean-François Lesage

Synopsis

This film is an exploration of the unsuspected world of insects and their relationship to the rest of the living world (including humans). Neither a purely scientific document, nor simply made up of anecdotes and curiosities, the aim is to create a narrative based on subjects associated with insects. The story is sometimes dramatic, sometimes comic. The aim is to raise public awareness of the collapse of insect biodiversity. Neither a didactic documentary nor a formalist work, the story unfolds through detailed video footage of insects. A telescoping on a scale too small for the eye, to reveal the invisible and the unsuspected.
